Keynote Speaker

Maree Crabbe: Director of the Australian violence prevention initiative, It's Time We Talked. Maree is an educator, author, researcher, and filmmaker passionate about preventing gender-based violence and supporting communities in addressing the influence of pornography on young people.

Keynote Presentation

Topic: Instances of Problematic and/or Harmful Sexualised Behaviours and domestic/family/gendered violence are rising in our communities, and schools are not immune. International research suggests that pornography contributes to cultural conditions that cultivate sexual assault and gendered violence. Nearly half of Australian young people aged 9-16 report seeing sexual images in the past 12 months. Many of these young people report that their first exposure was during primary school. Porn has become a default sex educator for many young people, with serious implications for their capacity to negotiate free and full consent, for mutual respect, sexual health, and gender equality.

Maree Crabbe will explore how pornography impacts young people and what can be done to address this issue, drawing on international research and her own interviews with young people, experts, and pornography industry professionals. This presentation is essential for school counsellors, psychologists, wellbeing staff, and educational leaders in primary and secondary schools.
